When
Frederick Ndabaramiye was 15, rebels in his native Rwanda
tied his upper arms together and beat him. They cut
off both his hands and left him for dead. Determined
not to be a beggar, Frederick learned to live life without
hands, grasping objects by crossing his stumps around
them. By doing this, he could eat, dress himself, shave,
and has even become an accomplished artist. He now says,
"I can give testimony that there are good people
in the world, and because of that, I can forget what
happened to me in 1998." His hopes and dreams to
create a center for others, particularly those injured
by the genocide, is now being realized with the sponsorship
of Jessie's Place.

When founder, Jessica
McCall, saw the widespread poverty and despair on a trip to
Rwanda while representing her organization, she along with
Frederick Ndabaramiye and Zachary Deusingimana decided to
open a community center, UBUMWE, in the town of Gisenyi. This
center provides help to the handicapped population and to
the street children of Gisenyi. You can help her in her efforts
by making a donation.
